Cooling Tower Uses and Industrial Applications

A cooling tower is a heat extracting device that draws the waste heat from the heat source and releases it into the atmosphere by evaporation. The water to be cooled is broken down into small water droplets with the help of nozzles. The air stream which is drawn from the bottom or on the sides of the cooling tower based on the type of cooling tower. This air stream when it comes in contact with the water droplet absorbs the latent heat of the water droplet from the surface cooling down the water droplet to the wet-bulb temperature.

Cooling Towers are classified based on various aspects like type of draught: Natural or Mechanical. Further distinction is made based on (1) the type of flow- cross flow, counter flow, concurrent flow ;( 2) the  type of heat dissipation – wet (evaporative Cooling), dry, wet-dry; and (3) the type of application – industrial or power plant.

Closed loop (or closed circuit) cooling tower systems, also called indirect cooling tower systems, do not allow the water to come into contact with any outside substance, therefore keeping the water more pure due to the lack of foreign particles introduced.

Each type of cooling tower serves its specific purpose be it an open induced draught which is used in places where the cooling medium can be replaced at regular intervals. Whereas on the other hand, Closed circuit cooling towers or better known as Loop Cooling Towers are used for application specific reasons where water available is either scarce or exorbitantly high in cost. In these cases, clean water can be passed through the copper tubes and dirty or hard water readily available can be used for cooling the clean water passed through the copper tubes. This reduces the scaling effect which is known to reduce the efficiency and increase the running cost.

The primary use of Cooling Towers is to remove heat from machines or heated process materials like in power plants, petroleum refineries, Chemical Plants, natural gas processing plants, Food processing plants, Plastic industry, etc.

Being in the cooling tower industry since 1988, Harrison Cooling Towers has supplied to most of these industries. Harrison Cooling Towers is one of the major players for induced draught cooling Towers with installations all over India, Middle East, African Continent, UAE, Germany, France, Malaysia, etc.

  1. cooling towers may either use the evaporation of water to remove process heat and cool the working fluid to near the wet-bulb air temperature or, in the case of closed circuit dry cooling towers, rely solely on air to cool the working fluid to near the dry-bulb air temperature.
